The Right Question

After a great celebration day yesterday I let myself sleep in a bit later than normal this morning. I woke up to the sound of matchbox cars crashing around in the kitchen. As I sat and listened to my son play (he just learned how to get out of his toddler bed by himself this week) I smiled as I heard him start calling "dadda, dadda, where r u?" After a few min of searching around the entire house and looking in every room he wandered into our bedroom and found me quietly in bed. The moment he saw me, a huge smile came across his face - he was ecstatic to find me and screamed "dadda's home!"

There is a Psalm that says, "My heart says of you, 'Seek his face!' Your face, Lord, I will seek." Whether you realize it or not, the Bible tells us that this is the constant cry of our heart - To seek His face!

I want to search for Father the way Trey searched for me this morning - At all costs, embracing sacrifice, with passion and anticipation. I want to fulfill the cry of my heart and seek His face. I want to be full of awe and wonder when I find Him - even if He is waiting for me in the last place I look.

God doesn't hide from you and I. In fact, it is just the opposite - he is constantly revealing himself to us in everything we do. And yet, we often get frustrated don't we? We tend to believe that God doesn't want us to ever really find him. But that is contrary to His nature. It is contrary to who He is. God wants us to discover Him. He wants to be found.

Maybe the right question isn't "Why is God hiding from me?" but rather, "Am I seeking His face?"

"He also set eternity in the hearts of men."  (Ecc 3:11)

  1. John, I think that is so cool that you are able to 'see' spiritual truths like this in your relationship with your son. It makes me wish I could go back to when my kids were that age and have a do-over. Although I'm sure that there are still many lessons and reminders that God can/will show me through my kids at all ages.
It is so true that God is constantly revealing Himself to us. But God is creative and clever and wants to be discreet. We have to pay attention and stop wandering through life focused on ourselves. The first thing that comes to mind when you say the word "seek" is "hide-and-seek". In a way, every day with God is like a great big game of hide-and-seek - God is always hiding and we are always seeking. Except the difference in God's version is that He is hiding in EVERY place we check. Did you look under the bed? In the closet? Behind the recliner? In the back yard? Yup - He was 'hiding' in every one of those places. Just don't stop when you find him once. Keep looking!
I encourage you to keep looking for God in your daily life like this. I know it pleases Him immensely each time we find another one of His (not so) secret hiding places.

You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. (Psalm 32:7)

  2. Kevin - great analogy. "God is hiding in every place we look!" It is not always the burning bush experience - sometimes it is - but often it is in the quiet, the simple, the mundane where he is waiting! Thanks for the thought.
